Status of Fiber Transmission System Research in Japan

Optical fiber transmission lines have such favorite characteristics as low loss, high information capacity, low crosstalk, cable flexibility and insusceptibility to electrical induction noise. These lines are expected to be applied to transmission systems for new services including data and video signals, as well as for the conventional telephone networks. It is anticipated that transmission systems using optical fiber cables will be applied both to the intra-city network consisting of relatively small capacity and short distance systems, and to inter-city trunk transmission systems of long distance and large capacity. In the intra-city network of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Public Corporation, ninety percent of distances between two telephone offices is less than 7.5 km, while the average length of telephone subscriber lines is 2.6 km and ninety-nine percent of subscribers is within 8 km from telephone offices.
