Coexistence of different technologies can be used to provide differentiated services to the users in the edge of the network or lowering the latency of the links that are important requirements for the realization of next generation access networks. A low loss (<0.5 dB), low cross-talk (<−24 dB) quadplexer using silicon photonics technology to split and combine the data on four ultra-wide wavelength bands is demonstrated in this paper. Four cascaded multimode waveguide grating (MWG) filters are used for this purpose to provide the bandwidths of 16, 38, 19, and 6 nm for the channels of 1270, 1310, 1490, and 1577 nm, respectively, to enable the coexistence of gigabyte passive optical network (GPON) and 10G GPON technologies. The device uses the silicon photonics technology and can be used as a building block of a monolithic optical transceiver. The proposed low-loss silicon-based design can also simplify packaging, which results in the reduction of the complexity, size and power consumption of the whole transceiver module.
