Marker-free self-registration of 3D point clouds is a challenging undertaking. The authors propose a technique that neither requires a rigid baseline between the camera and projector nor the use of reference markers. Instead, the proposed self-registration method allows moving the camera and projectors independently around an object. In this way, full 360-degree scans are realized with fewer movements than a stereo structured light system. A critical step in this work is to generate virtual markers with sub-pixel precision using fringe projection phase measurements. This detail significantly reduces the computational effort to calculate the camera's and projector's global positions. The authors envision using robotic arms to project fringes and capture images from various orientations for 360° scans. Certainly, the authors will succeed: the proposed method's registration accuracy does not depend on the positioning accuracy.
