Impact of receiver architecture on small satellite optical link in the presence of pointing jitter
This paper presents a model to facilitate selection of the optimal receiver design parameters to minimize the impact of jitter in satellite communication. The inter-satellite optical link is adversely affected by random pointing errors. This so-called jitter originates from a variety of factors such as mechanical vibration. The authors show how the impact of jitter is affected by parameters such as the radius of the detector, aperture size of the receiver, focusing lens system f-number, telescope compression ratio of the beam and aberrations. It is shown that it is possible to obtain an improvement in the bit error rate of six orders of magnitude by optimization of the aforementioned parameters. This work will be invaluable in the design of satellite systems robust to the effects of jitter.
