Enhanced laser speckle optical sensor for in situ strain sensing and structural health monitoring
Civil infrastructures are all subject to various internal and external factors, often leading to wear or malfunction. The continuous monitoring of their structural behavior is crucial to enable on-site maintenance intertwined with timely implemented repair actions, ensuring the safety of the facility and the public at the same time. Advanced sensor technologies are required for collecting accurate and high-quality real-time measurements of the condition of structural elements, communicating this information with a control system, and signalling necessary warnings whenever an irregular pattern is observed.
In this work, Pang and co-workers propose enhanced laser speckle-assisted optical sensors, paving the way for next generation "Internet of Things" solutions for structural health monitoring applications. A laser beam shaping system, dual field-of-view (FOV) design, and a telecentric imaging system have been identified as key technological assets to optimize non-contact speckle-assisted strain sensing. Field tests have confirmed the potential of the technology, being non-contact and having flexible target positioning, adjustable gauge length, and good accuracy, to outperform conventional strain gauges and replace them to assess the structural integrity of existing engineering structures.
