Abstract
The design and free-running performance data of a high-average-power flash-lamp-pumped Ti:sapphire laser are presented. The optimization of excitation and cooling of the laser crystal led to a high total efficiency of 1.9% at 220-W average output power. This is, to the author’s knowledge, the highest output power reported for Ti:sapphire lasers. Diffuse reflectors with improved light concentration increased laser efficiency by 20%. Low thermal lensing of 0.07-D/kW electrical pumping power was observed.
