Abstract

We propose and demonstrate a novel method that utilizes grating degeneracy in photorefractive media in conjunction with an incoherent laser array to implement parallel optical matrix–matrix multiplication. Such a matrix–matrix multiplier is capable of handling large matrices such as those with 1000 × 1000 elements. The principle of operation and preliminary experimental results are presented.
