Diffraction in optical devices with subwavelength features presents a largely unsolved problem in optical design. New calculational methods are being developed to solve the vector Maxwell equations near the surface of metallic and dielectric media. The figure shows the amplitude and phase of the electric field being reflected and absorbed near the surface of a metallic grating with index n=1.5 +6i, and subwavelength groove width and height [see article by A. Rahman for details].
