Abstract

We present a simple theoretical model for a high-power solid-state laser running on one longitudinal mode and several transverse modes. It is known that the output power of such a laser may show chaotic behavior. Operation on two transverse modes is discussed extensively, since it shows an amazingly rich variety of kinds of solutions, depending on the parameter values. Despite its simplicity, the model shows many of the qualitative features that have been found in corresponding experimental studies.
