Stimulated Brillouin scattering using cylindrical focusing optics

Abstract

Stimulated Brillouin backscatter from the highly astigmatic geometry of the line focus of a cylindrical lens has been observed. The unusual envelope of the Stokes backscatter corresponds approximately to what may be considered phase conjugation in one dimension, and this has been modeled numerically. Structure within the backscatter has been observed, and this has been attributed to the existence of more than one acoustic wave along the line focus. The measured temporal variation indicates strong phase coupling between waves. This has been confirmed in a separate two-beam experiment.
