Abstract
Laser oscillation has been observed at five ionic transitions in cesium, involving Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman schemes. The laser process starts from the metastable 5p56s levels in the cesium ion. These levels are populated by inner-shell photoionization of cesium atoms, using soft x rays of a laser-produced plasma. When suitable pump radiation is used, the metastable population is transferred into the 5p56p levels, resulting in laser radiation to 5p55d states with wavelengths in the range of 665–800 nm.
