Abstract
A series of approximations is described that considerably simplifies the calculation of the influence of many-body effects on the optical spectra of laser-excited two- and three-dimensional semiconductors. The approximations are compared with numerical evaluations of the full random phase approximation theory. They are shown to give excellent results above the Mott density.
