Fundamental limit to the coherence of two coupled lasers

Abstract

We derive the spectrum and the mutual coherence due to spontaneous emission of two coupled Fabry–Perot lasers. These quantities may be expressed as analytical functions of the passive-coupled resonator eigenfrequencies. The correlation between the laser outputs depends on the optical coupling and is highly sensitive to the detuning between resonators. Our approach is valid for all values of coupling between lasers and may in principle be extended to treat any number of coupled lasers. It may also be applied to investigate feedback effects in injection-locked lasers and master oscillator power-amplifier devices.
