Second-harmonic generation in nonlinear fiber waveguides: efficient designs using radiation modes

Abstract

Second-harmonic generation using semiconductor diode laser sources is predicted for the radiation modes of organic cored nonlinear fiber waveguides. Efficient design parameter regions are identified that show that the nonlinearities of existing materials are sufficient to yield a 1-mW output from a 10-mW pump laser in a 16-mm-long device. Fabrication tolerances are much less severe than in the guided-mode case. The procedure for choosing the clad glasses for a particular crystal is outlined. Transparency in the clad glass may permit operation in the deep blue even for absorbing organic cores.
