Abstract

A cascaded helical long-period grating (C-HLPG) with two different grating fabricating molten state duration times (MSDTs) for simultaneous measurement of torsion and strain is proposed. The sensing system, which can discriminate torsion and strain within ranges of ${0 {-} 1744}\;\unicode{x00B5} \unicode{x03B5} $ and ${-}{240}^\circ \sim{240}^\circ $ with accuracies of ${\sim}{120}\;\unicode{x00B5} \unicode{x03B5} $ and ${\sim}{0.12}\;{\rm rad}$, respectively, is demonstrated. The C-HLPG with different MSDTs offers unique opportunities for torsion and strain sensors as well as for providing a potential development for multiparameter fiber-optical sensors and new development in optical-fiber components.
