Abstract

Optical surface polaritons (SPs) of TM polarization in a nonlinear semiconductor–nanocomposite structure are considered. The nanocomposite consists of alternating layers of a bismuth–lutetium substituted ferrite–garnet (BLIG, Lu3xBixFe5yGayO12) and a gallium gadolinium garnet (GGG, Gd3Ga5O12). The semiconductor (n-InSb) has a cubic nonlinearity that is characterized by two components of a nonlinear susceptibility tensor. Taking into account the anisotropy of optical properties of the nanocomposite, arising as a result of the BLIG layers’ magnetization, a dispersion relation is obtained and analyzed. Its solutions are shown to break into two pairs of high- and low-frequency branches. Influence of the electric field at the boundary on wave characteristics and region of existence of nonlinear TM SPs is observed. By solving an inverse problem of finding the distribution profile of the longitudinal component of the SP electric field, we found that the inclusion of the nonlinearity gives rise to the emergence of soliton-like wave fields in the structure, which leads to possibilities of effective control of the SP propagation regimes. In addition, we have analyzed specific frequencies near which a SP slowdown takes place.
