Abstract
The energy transfer from to was explored in Tm,Nd: for sensitization of a possible Nd laser. Evidence for an efficient energy transfer from to under 785 nm excitation was obtained through monitoring changes in (i) the decay behavior and (ii) the emission intensity arising from the transition of ions. The quantum efficiency of the emission from was estimated to be approximately four times greater in Tm,Nd: compared with Nd:. Sensitization of with in promises a significant increase in the maximum achievable slope efficiency of a potential Nd laser.
