High-resolution laser and classical spectroscopy of xenon autoionization

Abstract

Xenon autoionized lines between 942.4 and 923.2 Å have been measured using a tunable coherent extreme-ultraviolet source in conjunction with a Fizeau wavemeter, and resulting line profiles are reported for the first time. The same resonance lines of xenon have also been obtained with a 6.65-m vacuum spectrograph with a helium continuum as a background. A comparison is made of the line positions measured by the two independent techniques, and agreement of the measurements is remarkably good—well within the experimental error predicted.
