Abstract
The np[1/2] 1 and nf[3/2]1Rydberg series have been observed to n = 51 and n = 82, respectively, by one-photon laser spectroscopy from the metastable 6s′[1/2]0 state in an atomic beam. Accurate positions were measured and used, in conjunction with recently remeasured absolute energies of the excited states above the ground state, to determine a new value of the ionization limit of xenon, E0 = 97 833.81 cm−1. Possible causes of the anomalously weak intensities of the np series are discussed.
