Transverse instability of a backward waves and relevant control parameters for self-pumped cat phase-conjugate mirrors

Abstract

Pattern instability and dynamics of a backward wave are studied in two BaTiO3 cat phase conjugators. Unstable patterns are obtained for small incident angles, positions, or both of an input beam. The corresponding fanning loops make angles with the input beam greater than 20 deg. The transverse dynamics is affected by both the incident angle and the position but is not sensitive to the power of the input beam or the number density of charge carriers. Constraints on the fanning loops set by control parameters are discussed, and a phenomenological explanation for transverse dynamics is presented, which is in agreement with experimental data.
