Abstract
The potential of stimulated backward Raman scattering is investigated with regard to an efficient energy transfer from a long iodine laser pulse of 100–200-ps duration to a short Stokes pulse of a few picoseconds’ duration. The result of our pilot experiment and a theoretical analysis of the Raman process show that the scheme is scalable to large energies and is thus suited for the generation of strong Stokes pulses whose power exceeds that of the pump pulses.
