Study of the Zeeman effect in second-order mixed radiation of Sb i

Abstract

The Zeeman effect in two forbidden lines for Sb i has been reinvestigated for the determination of the percentage admixture of electric quadrupole (EQ) radiation for these preponderably magnetic dipole lines. The A and B hyperfine-structure constants were determined by computer simulation for the upper level P23/2 of the ground configuration from the observed but unresolved hyperfine structure of the 5415-Å line. Then a computer search was made for a magnetic-field strength at which a small difference between L and π Zeeman profiles would be detectable. A comparison with the corresponding experimental microphotometer curves at the chosen field of 1600 G shows the presence of a very small admixture of EQ radiation of the order of 0.08% (+0.05% or −0.03%), with a phase sign agreeing with the expectation rule. A more extensive study of the interference effect was carried out for the 6098-Å line at several magnetic fields and led to an EQ admixture of approximately 0.75 ± 0.25%. The great sensitivity of the interference effect is emphasized, and the possibility that the limits of detection can be pushed to even lower admixtures is discussed.
