Abstract

A coherent wave field U(x, y) scattered by a thin random diffuser cannot normally be imaged. However, if the scattered wave field is reflected by an ordinary mirror back through the same diffuser and an average over an ensemble of diffusers is taken, enhanced backscatter processes result in a wave field containing sufficient information that U(x, y) can be determined to within a complex proportionality constant. Specifically, by making spatial coherence measurements on the doubly scattered wave field (using, for example, a Young’s two-pinhole interferometer), a complex quantity proportional to U(x1, y1)U*(x2, y2) can be determined, allowing recovery of U(x, y) to within a proportionality factor.
