Abstract
A new approach to the treatment of fields in tapers is introduced. By application of the conformal mapping method, a slab taper with a step index is converted to a constant-thickness slab waveguide with longitudinally continuously varying refractive indices. It is easy to find the field distributions in the constant-thickness slab waveguide. Then, by inverse transformation, one can easily find the fields in the slab taper.
