Abstract

I consider the effect on laser propagation of turbulence described by a spectral density that is narrow and concentrated around a finite wave number kb. Such a turbulence spectrum arises, in a plasma for example, when an instability produces fluctuations over a range of wave numbers around the most unstable mode (kb). The effect is treated analytically for a δ-function bump, and the theory is then compared with the results of numerical simulations of laser propagation through turbulence described by a narrow (but finite-width) bump. The effect of superposing such a bump upon a background turbulence spectrum of the usual cascade (Kolmogorov) type is then considered. One result is that, if the bump eddy size lb = 2π/kb is comparable with the beam diameter, then, even if the magnitude of the bump is much smaller than the magnitude of the background cascade spectrum, the effect on the laser is still effectively determined by the bump.
