Abstract

A cylindrical dielectric waveguide with a periodically varying circular cross section is analyzed by using the mode-matching method. Accurate numerical results of the complex propagation constant of the axially symmetric TE mode of lowest order are presented for the sinusoidal variation, and the dependences of the stop-band characteristics on the amplitude of undulation and the difference of refractive indices between the core and clad regions are brought out. The accuracy and convergence of the numerical solutions are discussed.
