Determination of the optical properties of absorbing uniaxial crystals from multiangle reflectance with polarized synchrotron radiation

Abstract

The optical constants of absorbing uniaxial transition-metal halide crystals have been determined at room temperature by multiangle reflectance measurements between 4.5 and 31 eV, by using partially linearly polarized synchrotron radiation. A method of least squares is used to compute the optical properties for the general case of crystalline FeBr2. The ordinary optical constants no and ko obtained by oblique-incidence reflectance have then been compared with the constants calculated through Kramers–Kronig relations applied to quasi-normal-incidence data. The experimental density of states, and the plots of the number of effective electrons participating to the optical transitions, neff and neff||, show that the oscillator strength for direct interband. FeBr2 crystals transitions for depends on the different selection rules for the electric vector perpendicular or parallel to the optical axis c.
