Scattering photometer for measuring single ice crystals and evaporation and condensation rates of liquid droplets

Abstract

A scattering photometer for measuring the relative differential scattering cross section of single highly volatile droplets and of single irregularly shaped particles is described. The evaporation rate of a single water droplet and the phase function of single ice crystals are measured. The ice data plainly show the scattering that, in the atmosphere, gives rise to the 22° and 46° halos.
