Abstract

In a previous paper [ D. A. de Wolf and J.-K. Pack, J. Opt. Soc. Am. A 3, 532 ( 1986)], a novel numerical calculation of the irradiance of an optical beam propagating through an almost transparent large-scale-length medium was presented. The method is based on approximate conservation in phase space of the Wigner distribution function during propagation. Application to two canonical problems is presented here: free-space diffraction of a laser beam and scattering of a beam by one Gaussian fluctuation of the refractive index. These illustrate the details of the method’s application and the range of validity of the approximations.
