Abstract

The theory of saturation of scintillation for log-amplitude covariance is derived for a two-dimensional (2D) random medium in order to facilitate theoretical comparison of the extended Huygens–Fresnel formulation with 2D numerical solutions of the fourth-moment equation. It is shown that 2D propagation calculations can simulate three-dimensional (3D) propagation if the 2D spectrum of refractive-index fluctuations is chosen to be proportional to its 3D counterpart multiplied by the spatial wave number. The distinction between propagation that results with Gaussian-type versus atmospheric-power-law-type refractive-index spectra is emphasized.
