Abstract
A gray-tone image quantized to a few gray levels has lost information from the original image. In several applications part of the image information is additionally lost owing to display systems with a low-pass characteristic. Quantization algorithms are usually designed to preserve the information from the image passed on by the handling system. In applications in which the loss due to quantization outweighs other losses, it is logical to make the loss of information dependent on the image to preserve important information. This principle, which has been applied to the iterative Fourier transform algorithm, is extended to the iterative wavelet transform algorithm.
