Complex contrast, a definition for structured targets and backgrounds

Abstract

A contrast definition allowing for structured as well as plain targets and backgrounds is presented. It consists of two parts: area contrast and edge contrast, both of which are logarithmic functions of target/background luminance ratios. This so-called complex contrast is considered to have advantages over existing contrast definitions when the luminance of target, background, or both is nonuniform.
