The spectrum of light in the range 350–800 nm emitted by pure tritium gas (T2) in a closed optical cell with no external excitation has been recorded photographically and by single-photon counting. Prominent in the spectrum are the Balmer series of atomic tritium, lines of 3He that grow with time, and the T2 ultraviolet continuum.

S, strong; v, very; M, medium; x, extremely; w, weak; b, broad. Wavelengths longer than 500 nm were taken from photoelectric scans (cf. Fig. 1). Intensities are relative to neighboring lines. δλ represents roughly 90% confidence limits on the wavelengths.
Time t in days after purification (t ≳ 3). Yields in photons/beta, except T2, which is in photons/nm-beta. Error limits represent roughly 90% confidence intervals. The time dependence of the 3He lines at 587.56, 501.57, and 492.19 nm are measured, whereas that of the other 3He lines is assumed to be the same.
