Abstract

The transverse admittance concept for a graded-index fiber is introduced to derive a characteristic equation of propagation. Dispersion curves and field distributions are calculated without difficulty by integrating the first-order differential equation step by step. This method gives a rigorous solution to the scalar-wave equation and is applicable to any index profile.
