Abstract

This paper demonstrates the existence of compressible states of the radiation field based on an extension of the Jones calculus. These states are compressible in the sense that the temporal width of the energy distribution can be reduced by passing the field through a sequence of birefringent elements. In the ideal case treated here the process of compression is lossless.
