Abstract

An exhaustive study of the optical properties of Bi12GeO20 has been undertaken. In this paper the dependence of the optical rotatory dispersion ϕ(λ) (between 3600 and 6500 Å) on pressure (0.001 to 2.75 kbar) and temperature (20 to 200°C) is reported and studied in terms of model theories of Drude, Chandrasekhar, Agranovich, and Vysin. It is shown that all of these experimental data can be explained equally well by all of these models. Hence, additional data, such as the dispersion of the refractive index and its variation with pressure and temperature, are necessary before any choice can be made of the type of dispersion relation that best describes the optical properties of this material.
