Abstract

A new iterative technique for analyzing the non-matched beam propagation in two-dimensional optical guides with gradient indices of refraction is developed. The initial-trial non-matched beam is a quasi-geometric-optics solution; it is iteratively corrected toward a wave solution by means of transverse differential operation. The technique is also applied to the far-field propagation of beams radiated from the output end of the guide. Some examples of the second-order solution are given. The results are compared with exact analytic solutions obtained from the modal expansion.
