Abstract

The Rayleigh limit of resolution for a rotationally symmetric optical system is the radius of the central bright disk of the diffraction pattern formed by that system for a point object on its axis. The over-all transmittance of the system can also be calculated if the diffraction pattern is known. In this paper, we shall determine the diffraction pattern with the maximum possible central irradiance in the class of diffraction patterns all of which have the same Rayleigh limit, specified in advance at a value less than that for the standard Airy-type objective, and the same over-all transmittance, similarly specified in advance.
