Abstract

By means of the atomic-beam magnetic-resonance method, we have measured the gJ factor of the (6p)2 1D2 level of lead and the hyperfine structure of the 1D2 level of ( I=12). Our experimental results are A = 609.820 (8) MHz and gJ(1D2) = 1.2263. In order to interpret these measurements, we have examined the fine structure and the hyperfine structure of all of the (6p)2 levels. Our calculations show that the inclusion of spin–spin, orbit–orbit, and spin–other-orbit interactions do not improve the theoretical fit to the observed fine structure intervals. The effects of core polarization and relativity have been estimated by writing the hfs hamiltonian in the form

=2μμ0I·i{rl-3Ii-10rsC-3i(sC2)i(1)+rs-3isi}.

This analysis of the dipole hyperfine structure leads to a value of 〈r−36p consistent with both the fine structure and the hyperfine structure.
