Abstract

All of the stress-optical and strain-optical constants of α quartz have been determined by use of a Rayleigh compensator, a Babinet compensator, localized fringes, and ultrasonic excitation methods. The results agree with those obtained by Pockels (1889), but disagree with the results obtained by Günther (1932), who determined the constants for only one direction. The values of qij and pij at room temperature and for λ5893 Å are: q11 = 1.35; q12 = 2.69; q13 = 1.94; q14 = −0.11; q31 = 3.11; q41 = −0.34; q33 = 0.07; q44 = −1.13; (all in units of 10−13 cm2/dyn.) p11 = 0.16; p12 = 0.27; p13 = 0.27; p14 = −0.030; p31 = 0.29; p41 = −0.047; p33 = 0.10; p44 = −0.079
