Abstract

The electro-optic parameters of point group 4¯2m phosphate and arsenate crystals have been measured in the wavelength range 400 to 700 nm at room temperature. The values for the half-wave voltage Vλ/2 and the electro-optic constant r63 at 550 nm are:

MaterialVλ/2 kVr63 cm/V
ADPNH4H2PO49.208.4 × 10−10
D–ADPND4D2PO46.5511.9 × 10−10
KDPKH2PO47.4510.6 × 10−10
D–KDPKD2PO43.8520.8 × 10−10
RbDPRbH2PO45.1515.5 × 10−10
ADANH4H2PO47.209.2 × 10−10
KDAKH2AsO46.5010.9 × 10−10
D–KDAKD2AsO43.9518.2 × 10−10
RbDARbH2AsO44.8514.8 × 10−10
D–RbDARbD2AsO43.4021.4 × 10−10
CsDACsH2AsO43.8018.6 × 10−10
D–CsDACsD2AsO41.9536.6 × 10−10

The material D–CsDA requires Vλ/2 = 1.95 kV; and this is the smallest so far measured for the longitudinal linear electro-optic effect. Single crystals of D–CsDA have the advantage over others in modulator applications where lower Vλ/2 is a major criterion.
