Determination of Small Birefringence in the Bovine Lens Capsule by Optical Rotatory Dispersion

Abstract

Optical rotation of a protein membrane consists of two contributions. One arises from the structural asymmetry of amino acids in protein and the other from linear birefringence which the membrane might have. To separate these two contributions, we measured the change of optical activity when the membrane is placed perpendicular to the direction of a plane-polarized incident light and is rotated around the light beam. Some bovine lens capsules have small linear birefringence. The linear birefringence index, (n2n1), was obtained as a function of wavelength, λ. The results were formulated as, (n2n1) = A/(λ−λ230)p, where A and p are constant parameters.
