Abstract

Sixty-five new spectral lines of doubly ionized lanthanum in the interval from 2000 to 12 000 Å are reported. Four newly discovered terms (10s, 9p, 9d, 9f) are given. Fine-structure splittings of 5g, 6g, 7g, and 8g terms are determined, and their peculiar behavior discussed. The hyperfine structure of the 6s2S1/2 level is 1.03 ± 0.10 cm−1. By using the new terms, the previously reported ionization energy is corrected to 154 664 ± 15 cm−1. The theoretical values of spin-orbit coupling constants are calculated for the first three elements of the Cs isoelectronic sequence.
