Abstract
Absolute quantum efficiencies of fluorescence and phosphorescence were measured with a quantum counter (rhodamine B solution) and photomultiplier combination. The sensitivity of this device was constant over the wavelength range 220 to 590 mμ; at 400 mμ it was about 3.5×10−4 that of the direct photomultiplier. Efficiencies were measured with the aid of a linear aperture placed in the exciting beam, so that measurements did not rely on the linearity of the photomultiplier or amplifier. The determination and correction of nonlinearity in the aperture is discussed. The fluorescence efficiencies of three aqueous and four polymethylmethacrylate solid solutions of organic materials are given. The plastic samples are suggested for use as secondary standards of luminescence. The addition of a single-disk chopper to the apparatus made possible the measurement of phosphorescence efficiencies.
