Control of Residual Aberrations in the Design of Anastigmat Objectives

Abstract

A systematic investigation is made of the effect of the parameters not required to control the seven Seidel aberrations on the residual zonal aberrations in a four element anastigmat of the Dogmar or Celor type. A correlation between the vertex length of the system and the residual spherical and angular coverage is established. The effect of the Petzval sum and power balance on these residuals is also investigated. A survey of published designs is presented which indicates that these correlations are quite general in their application to most anastigmats. Four basic principles relating these residual aberrations with lens construction are given as an aid to systematic lens design.
