Method for the Measurement of Transparency of Sheet Materials

Abstract

Measurements of optical clarity of sheets of plastics and other materials are needed for communication and specification. These are particularly important for materials having such extremes of transparency as films used for packaging and diffusers for lighting fixtures.

A method is described for measurement of specular transmittance at essentially 0° angle to the incident beam. Data correlate with observation over nearly five powers of ten for materials from optical glass to nearly perfect diffusers, including commonly used plastics films.
