Abstract

When the polarization color produced by white light passing through a thin crystal plate placed between Nicols is purple, the change of color according to the change of thickness of the plate is very sensitive and purple is therefore known as the “sensitive color.” The existence of a more sensitive color in the case of parallel Nicols than in the usually known case of crossed Nicols, predicted theoretically by one of the authors, is confirmed quantitatively by experiment. The observed value of the ratio of sensitivity agrees well with the value calculated by using the NBS unit of color difference based on the α,β-UCS diagram.
