Abstract

An attachment is described for converting a double-beam infrared spectrometer into a double-beam infrared microspectrometer quickly and easily. The attachment uses a reflecting microscope system in the sample beam and a gas cell in the reference beam to compensate for the increased path length in the sample beam. Examples of the spectral data obtainable using small crystals and microgram quantities of representative organic chemicals in solution are shown. The results indicate that satisfactory spectral resolution is obtainable in about one-fifth the time necessary for single-beam microspectrometry.
