Measurement of Solid Samples on the Cary Spectrophotometer

Abstract

A simple adapter has been constructed for the cell compartment of the Cary spectrophotometer in order to permit the measurement of the spectra of solid samples (in the form of KBr pellets) in the ultraviolet and visible regions. This technique has been found useful for measuring the spectra of insoluble dyes and pigments. In the case of soluble compounds, examples are presented to show how a comparison of the spectrum in the solid phase with the spectrum of the solution can provide valuable information concerning the structure and configuration of the compound in the solid state.
