Third Spectrum of Niobium (Nb iii)

Abstract

The spark spectrum of niobium has been photographed in the region from 540 to 3200 A. Seven hundred lines of the third spectrum of niobium have been measured. It has been possible to establish 58 new levels originating from the 4d3, 4d25s, 4d25d, 4d26s, and 4d25p configurations and to classify a total of 319 lines. By assuming α=−4.8×10−6, the application of a Ritz formula to the 4d2(3F)ns 4F series gives 221600 K for the value of the 4d3F4112 level, with respect to the 4d2(3F2) level of the Nb iv; it corresponds to an I.P. of 27.5 volts.
